Oral Maxillofacial Surgery is a unique blend of medicine and dentistry.
It includes a wide range of procedures that start from simple procedures like impacted wisdom tooth and wisdom tooth surgery to a lot more complicated procedures like the ones that involve jaw abnormalities and corrective jaw surgery. Complex procedures like a fibula free transfer graft also falls under the procedures of oral maxillofacial surgery. It can be done with the help of proper support and expertise.
The surgery refers to those kinds of diseases that are linked with the oral cavity and the region immediately surrounding it.
The minor disease that are linked with the branch of oral maxillofacial surgery are the ones like tooth decay warranting tooth extraction and impacted wisdom tooth. These require wisdom tooth surgery as far as the wisdom tooth is concerned or just dento- alveolar surgery as far as other teeth are concerned.
Procedures like a lump on the lip also falls under the care of oral maxillofacial surgery. These kinds of procedures are done under local anesthesia and sometimes general anesthesia. There is always a possibility that these tissues will be sent to a pathology lab where they are bound for a routine histology that is required in order to confirm the diagnosis.
Biopsies can also be done.
Bigger problems such as a dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst or an ameloblastoma also comes under oral maxillofacial surgery. The whole procedure can involve simple enucleation of the cyst to resection of the pathology. Facial trauma, lacerations of the lips and face, fracture of the jaw bones and facial bones are handled by the oral maxillofacial department. Dental and oral maxillofacial implants are other areas where the surgery is used.
The surgery that is done by placing dental implants in oder to replace missing teeth in the jaw is also handled by the oral maxillofacial surgery. The surgery also handles implants like orbit implants and otic or ear implants as well.
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) also comes under this surgery and is handled brilliantly with the help of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Jaw joint pain normally happens due to stress or trauma. It can also happen because of normal physiological wear and tear. These can be handled by Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Those dental infection that leads to swelling can be easily treated by oral maxillofacial surgery.
These days Oral Maxillofacial Surgery is even responsible for correcting as well as reconstructing jaw surgery as well. Corrective jaw surgery and re constructive jaw surgery is also commonly carried out by the oral maxillofacial surgical team.
