Genes are responsible for at most 15% of cancers. What matters most as far as the prevention is concerned, is not our genetic makeup but the kind of biology that we build up inside our body in order to support our natural defense mechanism against the growth of cancer cells.
Belief...
Most of us have a
belief that cancer is caused due to genes. But let me tell you that
it is NOT genetic. A large Scandinavian study that was performed on
identical twins stated that in lots of cases they did not share the
risk for cancer.
In fact, a study was conducted, in the
New England Journal of Medicine, and it stated that "inherited
genetic factors make a minor contribution to susceptibility to most
types of [cancers].” This finding proves that the environment has a
vital role in causing common cancers.
A New Approach...
As
far as the treatment of cancer is concerned, there is no alternative
to conventional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy,
immunotherapy or, soon, a new treatment will be started which is
known as molecular genetics.
However, these treatments help in
curing the tumor just like an army wages war which focus primarily
on destroying the cancerous cells. But at the same time, it is
equally important to change the environment that initiates the growth
of cancer cells. The main thing is that the "terrain" --
our biology needs to be changed.
An all together new study
has emerged from the last 10 years. This study tends to move us away
from genetics and squarely into the life-style factors that can be
controlled by all of us.
It is a fact that we all have
cancer cells in us. What is vital is that whether we do develop
cancer or manage to balance those factors that promote cancer. The
factors which promote cancer are :
