Psoriasis is a disease which is responsible for affecting the skin as well as joints. The most common symptom is the appearance of red scaly patches on the skin. These patches that are caused by psoriasis, are called aspsoriatic plaques. These are areas of inflammation and the excessive production of the skin.

Skin rapidly gathers at these points and appears in the form of a  silvery-white patch. Psoriasis Symptoms are not at all easy to identify and diagnose. For so many years, it has commonly been mistakenly taken for leprosy, and for so many years, the patients have been suffering the fall out of this wrong treatment. There are five types of Psoriasis. These are:

. Guttate Psoriasis
. Inverse Psoriasis
. Erythrodermic Psoriasis
. Pustular Psoriasis

What is the cause of psoriasis?

For the past so many years, a lot of research process have been performed. These indicate that psoriasis is a disorder of the immune system. There is a type of white blood cells in our body, these are called as the T cells.

These cells are responsible for protecting the body against infection and disease. It is believed that  psoriasis is related to an abnormal immune system which is responsible for producing so many immune cells, called T cells, in the skin. These T cells cause the inflammation and excessive skin cell growth that is
seen in people who suffer from psoriasis.

What are the symptoms?

The appearance of the red, scaly patches that reveal fine silvery scales when they are scratched.
Psoriasis is most common seen on the knees, elbows and scalp.
Some people become introvert and don't socialize because of the way the outside world react to the appearance of their skin.

Diagnosis

As there are so many forms of psoriasis, and each one has a kind of unique characteristic, the treatment of the disease can vary according to that. Sometimes a skin biopsy can be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of the disease

As such there is no cure that is available for psoriasis. However, there are a lot of options that are available which can clear psoriasis for a particular duration of time.
Lots of therapies have been made in use. Guttate psoriasis is managed in a more easier way. Patients who suffer from guttate psoriasis are usually given a course of oral antibiotics.

Sunshine - Sunshine plays a very important role in curing the disease. But make sure that you don't overexpose the skin as psoriasis may develop in areas of sunburn as well.

Baths – A warm water bath along with a bath oil or tar solution can soften the psoriasis. Don't use antiseptics as they may cause irritation.

Prevention

As such there is no known prevention for the disease. But you must keep your skin clean and moist.

It is recommended that you should have daily baths or showers and should avoid scrubbing too hard, as it can irritation.
