Popular antidepressant medications, such as, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and others have taken commonplace in the lives of most people today – adults and adolescents alike. This practice is very much alarming and forces us to ponder upon the fact that are depression rates really soaring, or are these antidepressants just being forcefully made part of people's lives needlessly.

A recent study has indicated that despite the overwhelming number of these prescriptions, antidepressants  are only serving patients who are faced with severe depression. Researchers from Britain wished to examine and see if a patient's response to antidepressants results from the level of  depression they are suffering from. In order to go ahead with the plan, they conducted reviews on clinical trials that were provided to the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the four most popularly prescribed antidepressants. In order for antidepressants to be approved by the FDA, sufficient clinical trials should be carried out to test their effectiveness.

The University of Hull's professor, Irving Kirsch, in the United Kingdom, conducted a study with his colleagues inly to discover the clinically significant proof that the effectiveness of antidepressants was most only in the tiny group of patients who suffered from extreme depression.

“Although patients get better when they take antidepressants, they also get better when they take a placebo, and the difference in improvement is not very great”, professor Kirsch was quoted remarking. This provides strong evidence for the fact that people undergoing depression can get rid of it without taking the assistance of harmful chemical treatments.
