Science has proved that people diagnosed with depression have high risk of getting a heart disease or a cardiac event, which is called heart attack or stroke in medical terms.
Lots of evidences show that depression is a common thing in heart patients that increases the risk of another cardiovascular event. Yet, no reason has been pin down for the association of both the problems. It is said that higher risk of cardiac events can be a result of the behavior coming with depression, during low activity levels.
When you are feeling low, its hard to motivate yourself and harder to get up & become active. This vicious circle can lower your health standard and reduce the chances of getting better.
A patient getting treated for cardiovascular disease is aware of importance of being active to recover the strength of the body and remain healthy. A study was done on 1017
patients with a stable heath disease where they were made to fill a questionnaire to see if they show the symptoms of depression. The patients also answered questions about how active they were last month, including sports.
Around 199 patients showed depressive symptoms. The study also showed that the depressed people were more likely engaged in things like smoking, were not taking proper medicine as well as were less active. Even after using different statistical tools, the depressed subjects were 31% more likely to have another cardiac event.
Another important finding of the work is that the physical inactivity is associated with 44% increased rate of cardiac events. For this, exercise can become more important part of treatment for heart and depression.
If you are depressed and have had a heart attack or some other cardiovascular problem, researches show that getting active can reduce the risk of repetition of the pattern.
