Fever is one of the ailments most of the people get, and ignore until they get too sick to do anything themselves. At this point, you should go to the doctor and let him treat a more serious condition.

What is a Fever?

When it body goes over its normal body temperature, it causes fever. The normal body temperature us around 98.6 F, but it is a little higher or lower in case of some people. It is really important that you should know your normal body temperature, so that you can compare it with the body's normalcy when you get sick. This will certainly help you in accessing your condition in a better way.

Fever is usually the way of a body to defend itself against virus and bacteria, than can not live in a hot climate. This raises the temperature of the body as it tries to kill them. Immune system works better when body is hot, because the rest of the body does not require to focus on keeping itself warm, as it can focus properly on fighting with the agents of illness.

You can check fever in several ways. Use a thermometer to detect fever by keeping in inside mouth, under armpit or in rectum. In old days mercury thermometers were used, but now doctors recommend to upgrade to digital thermometer that prevents any accident resulting from mercury contamination.

Treatments

As the body is healing itself, the patients with low fever should not be given any treatment or else it will affect the ability of the body to fight from bacteria and viruses. If the fever is high and the patient is feeling an excessive discomfort, then treatment is given to provide an ease from pain & suffering. Taking Aspirin or Ibuprofen is easiest way to treating a fever. These make the blood thin and let the body cool. A warm or cool shower can lower down the temperature. Do not put a patient to cold shower, as this will cause excessive chill and make the body try to heat itself again.
