Chronic bronchitis is a disease or inflammation of the bronchi, which leads in increased production of mucus. The mucus blocks the airways and makes it difficult for air to get into your lungs. This condition lasts longer than 3 months.
Causes
Cough with Expectoration: Normally, it begins with "winter cough" and "smoker's cough", which gradually increases its severity and duration. The mucoid or mucopurulent is the expectoration, which depends the presence of infection.
Shortness of breath: The air way obstruction, broncho-spasm and in certain cases due to development of emphysema leads to chronic bronchitis.
Treatment:
Chronic bronchitis often occurs with emphysema and together these diseases are termed as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). One of the best ways to get rid of this condition is to avoid things that irritate your lungs. You can wear a mask to protect your lungs. There are certain medicines which can treat chronic bronchitis. However, you need to consult a doctor before consuming any medicines. Exercising regularly can strengthen the muscles that help you breath.
Causes
- Smoking: Although, it is considered to be one main causes of chronic bronchitis but only 12-15% of smokers develop COPD. The smoke irritates the airways and causes bronco constriction, sluggish ciliary movement and hyper secretion of mucous.
- Pollution: The smoke developed from industrial, domestic and sulphur-dioxide are some of the main causes of air pollution that are responsible of chronic bronchial irritation and increased resistance to the airflow.
- Infection: Bacterial and viral infection also causes chronic bronchitis. Some of the main organisms that leads to such a conditions are hemophilus influenza and streptococcus pneumonia.
- Occupation: Usually, coal miners and industrial workers are exposed to dust and fumes which may irritatetheir lungs and develop chronic bronchitis.
- Genetic Abnormalities: At times, genetic abnormalities are linked with alpha anti-protease deficiency.
