Every time we hear a lot of about AIDS. But, do you know what AIDS is? Well, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a viral disease caused by HIV. Now question is, what is HIV? HIV is the abbreviated form of Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a retro-virus, which has the tendency to replicate in a fraction of seconds. It attacks the human immune system severely. Human body contains antibodies in its immune system, which fight against diseases. But, when human immune system begins to weaken, human body comes at the risk and can't fight against infections, such as tuberculosis and AIDS.
HIV/AIDS is a transmitted disease that can be transmitted from an HIV infected person to another through the exchange of blood either way, directly or indirectly. Thus, one should be careful about the use of unsterilized sharp instruments, like razor, needle, injection syringe and hair clipper. Unprotected sexual intercourse can also cause the transmission of HIV/AIDS. An unborn baby can be affected by this disease, if a woman is living with HIV/AIDS. This transmit to the unborn child through the umbilical cord that connects the mother and the unborn child. HIV/AIDS can also be transmitted through blood transfusion, if the transfused blood is infected with HIV/AIDS.
People do have many misconception regarding the transmission of HIV. But, always remember, it doesn't transmit through mosquito bites, having a hand shake with an HIV infected person, hugging, kissing, or sharing personal belongings like a towel and other clothes.
Blood test is the way through which one can confirm if he or she has contacted the virus. In order to detect, one has to go for the blood test from time to time, say twice in a year, since this virus has incubation period of about 3-6 months. Those who are unmarried and if they indulge in sexual intercourse, they can protect themselves from the risk of HIV transmission with condom. And the only option for married people is to be faithful to their partners. Here the point is that, everyone should make sure that they avoid unprotected sexual intercourse in order to keep themselves away from the infection of the disease.
