JOsteoporosis is also known as the silent disease. Since, most people do not realize that they are affected by osteoporosis until they are either diagnosed. It is a systematic skeletal disease that results in thinning of bones. Under this condition the entire bone architecture changes. The main cause behind this disease is the body's inability to absorb calcium and develop new bone tissue as people age. Most of these changes are hormonal in nature.

Studies indicate that more than ten million people in USA have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. The study also revealed that one in eight women over the age of 50 with osteoporosis suffers from spine fracture in a given year. Woman are believed to have 40% chances of facing some kind of fracture in their lifetime.
However, only 13% of men are estimated to be affected with osteoporosis.

The disease results in an increase in the risk of a person suffering a fracture or a broken bone. With the increase in age, bones tend to become more weak and fragile. This effect at times lead to problems like hip fractures, rib fractures and hand fractures. Some results indicate that the incidence of osteoporosis will double in the next 30 years.
