Diagnosis of autism is different from diagnosis of other disorders. It is possible that your doctors might take years in gathering enough evidences for the diagnosis of this disorder. Parents suspect the disease long before the diagnosis is given because they find their child not making eye contact or the communication process, which child has learned in first year of life starts to regress slowly. The average age of diagnosis is between the age of 2-3, because it is the time when symptoms start to manifest themselves.
It is difficult to diagnose autism because the child undergoes developmental changes in the first three years of his life. Most of the parents and doctors might ignore the nuances of communication, when they are not watching their child for autism. The pattern of child development changes frequently, so onslaught of autism is still impossible to catch. The child might have some odd quirks, but the difference between these quirks and minor autism are just difficult to tell.
Child autistic can only be judged by a doctor. There are many children who will spend their entire life being tagged with the emotionally disabled and behaviorally challenged labels. Therefore, many doctors do
not use these labels to save parents from emotional impact. Chances of lawsuits are also there, which can cause adverse reactions in the later life of child. No medical tests have been discovered yet, which can tell the presence of disorder like autism.
Criterion for autism is generally determined a team of doctors, who compare all the related cases and come out with a common symptom. The Diagnostic and Statistical manual for Mental Disorder is mostly used by clinicians and medical personal to classify autism. Constant vigilance towards established patterns and norms is another guideline used by these doctors.
It is seen that the autistic child find its comfort zone in a specific path, where he will walk around. He is most of the times very schedule oriented and will refuse to deviate from it. If the child is forced to change his pattern, he will lose control of emotions and behavior, which could led to uncontrolled anger and verbal confrontation.
Fixation on certain things is one point, which is not covered by criteria of autism. If an autistic child likes a topic, he can memorize the whole book based on the topic. There is one autistic boy in Wyoming, who recites the entire series of Dr. Seuss books including its title and reference sections.
