As a Dental Assistant, one has the opportunity to work in tandem with many others in the dental field. Some of the most common people a Dental Assistant has to work with are Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and the Receptionist.

To form a strong bond with the people you are working with is of utmost importance in order to ensure a successful team and good output. The smaller the dental facility is, the more important it becomes for you to form a strong relationship with each and every member of the staff.

Patients are also quick to detect staffing issues and no patient is particularly keen to come to a clinic where team-bonding is low and the staff-members despise eachother. A patient looks forward to a friendly and spirited atmosphere and the lack of it, can force him/her to look for other options.

A great set of communication skills is of paramount importance to a Dental Assistant. As a Dental Assistant, one has to constantly interact with patients, other staff-members, insurance companies and also the family members of patients.

Hence, it is crucially important for you to convey the message that you are extremely approachable. One may even find his/her career as a Dental Assistant declining as a result of poor communication skills.

Dental facilities should also make it's staff undergo training in order to promote interoffice relationships.
To avoid any sort of conflicts, a proper hierarchy order and a set of policies and procedures must be made clear. Everyone must be made aware of the guidelines and where to report in case of conflicts or other problems.

Some dental facilities require their staff members to attend compulsory communication workshops. These make the whole process of communicating a fun activity and also bring about a sense of belongingness towards the dental facility. Many inter-office struggles, that are a result of misconceptions and miscommunications, can be avoided in this way.

As a Dental Assistant it is not only important to understand your own communication style, but also equally significant to understand the various communication styles of your staff-members. It is equally important for you to want to assist others in any form possible.

However, effective communication in no way means that one lets others take  advantage of himself/herself, it simply means to be helpful and offer the best work you possibly can. Issues of communication can become a major obstacle in the way of a Dental Assistant and one should prevent this from happening . Misconceptions can be avoided to a huge extent by not reading between the lines and not always exercising your own judgment.

You should keep in mind that workplace is a place where you have to spend a majority of the day and it is imperative that you try your best to make it a comfortable and pleasant place.
