One notices that the popularity of Dental Assistants in the field of orthodontics is increasing every passing day. One can partly attribute this phenomena to the rising number of people interested in orthodontic care as well as the the technological advancements being made in this field.

Primarily, Dental Assistants' job involves sitting through procedures and handing the Dentist and Dental Hygienist tools and equipments. Occasionally, Dental Assistant also have to assist in lab work. 

However, the role of Dental Assistant in this area is quite different as well as demanding. Although the Dental Assistant is still required to perform the general responsibility of sterilizing the dental tools, in the field of orthodontics, he/she also has to perform other responsible tasks, such as fixing loose brackets, changing rubber bands and tightening wires.

Most Dental Assistant love to work in this field since this gets them involved in the real process of dentistry. Also, this gives them an opportunity to get directly involved with the patients and get acquainted to them.

However, specializing in the field of orthodontics is not commonly taught in regular Dental Assistant programs. Most of the specialized training for Dental Assistants is in the form of on-the-job training. Dental Assistants learn the different processes in this field by watching other experienced Dental Assistants perform the same job.

Whereas some Dental Assistants are intimated by this process of learning, some enjoy this opportunity to learn and go on to excel in the orthodontic field.

It is often observed that Dental Assistants are specialized in particular areas of the orthodontic process and when patients having the particular problem come, the specialized Dental Assistants are asked to handle them. Specialized task can involve changing brackets, removing excess cement, changing rubber bands and other similar tasks.

Mostly, the work of a Dental Assistant is finally reviewed and approved by a Dentist. Such a system helps a long way in time management and gives an organized structure to a dental facility. As a Dental Assistant also, you are sure to enjoy this experience due to the practical experience that you will be getting.
